The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, June 1, 2026, presented its fifth prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of former Minister of Power, Olu Agunloye, over an alleged $6 billion fraud linked to the Mambilla Power Project.
The case is being heard before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja. Agunloye is facing an amended seven-count charge bordering on official corruption and the alleged fraudulent award of the Mambilla hydroelectric power project contract to Sunrise Power Transmission Company Limited.
At the hearing, the prosecution called Iliya John Iyakwari, an Assistant Director of Legal at the Federal Ministry of Justice and currently serving as an Assistant Legal Adviser at the Federal Ministry of Power, as its fifth witness (PW5).
Led in evidence by prosecution counsel, Abba Mohammed (SAN), Iyakwari told the court that he certified official documents related to a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on May 21, 2003. According to him, the certification was carried out following a formal request by the EFCC.
He explained that in June 2023, the anti-graft agency sent a letter to the Ministry of Power, addressed to the Permanent Secretary, requesting extracts from the FEC meeting. The request was subsequently forwarded to the Legal Services Department for processing.
Iyakwari stated that his department contacted the appropriate unit responsible for such records, obtained the requested documents, and, upon instruction from his superior, certified the extract before transmitting it back to the EFCC using the ministry’s official letterhead.
During the proceedings, the witness identified key documents, including the EFCC’s request letter and the ministry’s official response, which were admitted into evidence as exhibits EFCC 3J and EFCC 3K.
Following the testimony, Justice Onwuegbuzie adjourned the matter until June 8, 2026, for the cross-examination of the witness.
