FG to Replace NYSC Khaki Uniform with Adire in Historic Reform to Boost Nigerian Textile Industry

The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the iconic khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with locally produced Adire fabric, marking one of the most symbolic changes under the newly approved reforms of the 53-year-old national service scheme.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the development during an interview on Channels Television's The Morning Brief on Thursday.
According to the minister, the decision is aimed at strengthening Nigeria's local textile industry, creating jobs, and ensuring government spending directly supports indigenous manufacturers instead of foreign suppliers.
"It's Adire. Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industries. Let's put our money back into the country," Olawande said.

Part of Sweeping NYSC Reforms
The proposed Adire uniform is one of several major reforms recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to modernize the NYSC.
Other key changes include:
A shift to a civilian-led operational leadership, while the military continues providing security support.
Deployment of corps members based on their academic qualifications and professional skills.
More security-conscious postings, with consideration given to regions where corps members studied or are familiar with.
A redesigned six-week orientation programme focused on leadership, entrepreneurship and digital skills.
A technology-driven mobilisation process and a new graduation ceremony to replace the traditional Passing Out Parade.

Government Targets Local Economic Growth
The government believes adopting Adire as the official NYSC uniform will increase demand for Nigerian-made textiles, support local artisans and manufacturers, preserve cultural heritage, and stimulate economic growth through increased local production.

Military Not Removed from NYSC
Reacting to reports suggesting the military would no longer participate in the scheme, Olawande dismissed the claims as false.
He clarified that the reforms only transfer operational leadership to civilians, while the military will continue to provide security and support during NYSC activities across the country.

Implementation Awaits Legal Backing
The reforms will take effect after amendments to the NYSC Act and relevant regulations, as directed by the Federal Executive Council.
The overhaul represents the first comprehensive reform of the NYSC since its establishment in 1973, with the Federal Government saying the new framework will make the scheme more skills-driven, economically relevant and youth-focused.

TwisdicInfo Insight: The replacement of the famous khaki uniform with Adire is more than a change in appearance—it reflects the government's push to promote "Made-in-Nigeria" products while redefining the future of the NYSC. If successfully implemented, the policy could boost Nigeria's textile industry, preserve indigenous culture, and create new economic opportunities for local fabric producers.
