Relief has swept across Oyo State after the pupils and teachers abducted by armed bandits in Orire (Oriire) Local Government Area regained their freedom, bringing an end to nearly two months of anxiety for their families and communities. The victims, who were kidnapped during coordinated attacks on three schools on May 15, 2026, were released following sustained security operations, although authorities are yet to disclose the full details surrounding their freedom.
The victims included 39 pupils and seven teachers, among them a school principal, who were abducted from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Esiele. During the attack, one teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly killed by the kidnappers while security operatives pursued the fleeing gunmen.
The abduction sparked nationwide outrage, with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) embarking on an industrial action to demand the victims' safe return. Religious leaders, civil society groups, parents and community members also staged protests and appealed to the Federal Government to intensify rescue efforts. Earlier reports indicated that the kidnappers demanded the release of suspected Boko Haram commanders in exchange for the captives, but both the Federal and Oyo State governments maintained they would not negotiate with terrorists.
Following their release, the freed pupils and teachers expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for securing their freedom. A video shared by the Presidency showed the victims thanking the government for its efforts, while officials are expected to provide medical care, psychological support and reunification services for the victims after weeks in captivity.
