The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has firmly rejected reports of an alleged directive by the Federal Government seeking to postpone its 2026 national officers' election, describing any attempt to interfere in its internal affairs as unconstitutional and unacceptable.
The association maintained that it is an independent professional body governed by its constitution and electoral guidelines, stressing that no external authority has the legal power to suspend, postpone, or dictate the conduct of its elections.

The controversy followed reports alleging that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice had directed the NBA to halt preparations for its 2026 leadership election. However, the association dismissed the reports, insisting that its electoral process would proceed in line with its constitution and established democratic procedures.
The NBA emphasized that its leadership emerges through a transparent electoral process managed by its Electoral Committee, adding that preserving the independence of the legal profession remains essential to upholding the rule of law and democracy in Nigeria.

The association further reassured its members that all arrangements for the forthcoming election remain on course and urged lawyers across the country to disregard any misinformation capable of undermining confidence in the electoral process.

The development has sparked discussions within the legal community, with many observers describing the NBA's position as a reaffirmation of the autonomy of professional institutions in Nigeria.

TwisdicInfo Insight: The NBA's response underscores the importance of institutional independence in a democratic society. As the umbrella body for legal practitioners in Nigeria, its ability to conduct internal elections without external influence is widely regarded as a key pillar in protecting the rule of law, professional integrity, and public confidence in democratic governance.
