NANS Unveils Constituency Scholarship Scheme to Support Thousands of Nigerian Students
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has launched a new education-focused initiative known as the Constituency Scholarship and Talent Development Scheme (CSTDS), aimed at expanding access to scholarships, mentorship, skills development, and international academic opportunities for students across Nigeria.
The scheme, unveiled on Monday in Lokoja, seeks to leverage partnerships with members of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to provide structured educational support for students at the constituency level.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of education, limited scholarship opportunities, and the need for greater investment in youth development. Under the leadership of NANS President, Babatunde Akinteye, the association has intensified efforts to secure scholarships, employment opportunities, and international exposure programmes for Nigerian students through partnerships with both public and private institutions. Recent engagements by NANS have already resulted in commitments for local and international scholarship opportunities and graduate employment support.
According to NANS, the CSTDS will focus on three major pillars:
Scholarship support for students across all constituencies.
International academic exposure and exchange programmes.
Mentorship, leadership training, and skills development initiatives.
The association disclosed that each participating constituency is expected to sponsor between 20 and 30 students annually, while a minimum of 10 beneficiaries from each constituency may gain access to international exposure programmes.
Speaking on the initiative, Akinteye described the programme as a strategic intervention designed to remove barriers preventing many students from accessing quality education.
“This initiative is a major step forward in ensuring that Nigerian students are not limited by geography or financial constraints. It is not just about awarding scholarships, but about creating pathways for long-term academic and career success.”
NANS Director of International Projects and Partnerships, Comrade Abraham Adewoye, explained that the scheme would tap into partnerships across the United Kingdom, United States, and Europe, creating pathways for Nigerian students to interact with global academic institutions and professional networks.
According to him, beneficiaries will gain access to international standards, academic collaborations, networking opportunities, and career development programmes that will prepare them for the global workforce.
The student body is urging senators, members of the House of Representatives, and state lawmakers to adopt the programme as part of their constituency development projects.
NANS noted that the scheme aligns with existing funding channels such as:
Constituency project allocations.
Education intervention funds.
Youth empowerment programmes.
Legislative educational support initiatives.
The association also promised transparency, accountability, and measurable impact in the management and implementation of the programme.
If successfully implemented nationwide, the CSTDS could become one of the largest student-focused constituency interventions in Nigeria. With NANS representing millions of students across tertiary institutions, the initiative has the potential to reduce financial barriers to education, increase access to international opportunities, and strengthen workforce readiness among young Nigerians.
The programme also reflects a growing trend of linking constituency development funds directly to education and youth empowerment, areas many stakeholders consider critical to Nigeria's long-term development. The Federal Government has similarly expanded scholarship and educational support programmes through the Ministry of Education in recent months.

Twisdic Insight: The success of the Constituency Scholarship and Talent Development Scheme will depend largely on the willingness of lawmakers to commit resources and ensure transparent implementation. While the initiative presents a promising opportunity to widen access to education, students will be watching closely to see whether it translates from policy announcements into real scholarships, international opportunities, and measurable benefits at the grassroots level. If effectively executed, CSTDS could become a model for constituency-driven educational development across Nigeria.
