Iran Accuses US of Violating Peace Deal as Fresh Strikes Push Middle East Back to the Brink

A fragile peace agreement between Iran and the United States has come under renewed pressure after Tehran accused Washington of violating the ceasefire by launching fresh military strikes, while the US insists its actions were a response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian officials, the latest US military operation targeted missile, drone, and radar facilities near the Strait of Hormuz, describing the attacks as a "clear violation" of the recently negotiated peace framework. Tehran warned that it reserves the right to respond to any act of aggression against its sovereignty.

The United States, however, maintained that the strikes were defensive, claiming they were carried out after Iranian forces launched drone attacks against commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime routes for global oil exports. US officials said the operation was intended to protect international shipping and uphold the terms of the ceasefire agreement.

The renewed exchange of fire has heightened fears that the weeks-old peace agreement could collapse entirely, raising concerns over regional stability and the safety of international shipping through the Persian Gulf. Analysts warn that any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could trigger higher global oil prices and further strain international energy markets.

The peace framework between Washington and Tehran also includes ongoing negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme, sanctions relief, freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and broader regional security arrangements. The latest hostilities now threaten to derail those diplomatic efforts.

International observers have urged both nations to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic dialogue, warning that further military escalation could destabilize the wider Middle East and undermine global economic confidence.

The Strait of Hormuz handles a significant share of the world's seaborne oil exports.
Fresh fighting could disrupt global energy supplies and increase fuel prices.
The crisis places renewed uncertainty over negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme and long-term regional security.
