The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have reaffirmed their commitment to working together to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections during Nigeria's 2027 general elections.
The renewed collaboration was highlighted on Tuesday, June 9, 2027, when the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, Obo Effanga, paid a courtesy visit to the Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC.
Speaking during the visit, Effanga, who was recently deployed to Edo State, explained that his engagement with the anti-graft agency formed part of broader consultations with critical stakeholders ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to him, strengthening relationships with law enforcement agencies is essential to promoting electoral integrity and addressing challenges that have historically undermined Nigeria's democratic process.
He acknowledged the EFCC's consistent role in combating vote-buying and other financial inducements during elections, stressing that deeper cooperation between both institutions would further protect the credibility of the electoral process.
"As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, it is important to engage key stakeholders and explore areas of collaboration that will enhance transparency and public confidence in our elections," he noted.
In a related development, the Edo State branch leadership of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) also visited the Benin Zonal Directorate to seek strategic partnership with the Commission.
Chairman of the institute in Edo State, Ibukun Akande, stated that the banking sector remains central to efforts aimed at tracking and preventing economic and financial crimes. He explained that closer cooperation between bankers and the EFCC would contribute significantly to promoting accountability and integrity within Nigeria's financial system.
Responding, the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC in Benin, Deputy Commander of the EFCC (DCE) Sa'ad Hanafi Sa'ad, reiterated the Commission's readiness to continue supporting INEC in curbing incidents of vote-buying before and during elections.
He also appreciated the leadership of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria for the visit, emphasizing that the fight against corruption requires collective action and sustained collaboration among relevant institutions.
Sa'ad assured both organisations that the EFCC remains committed to building partnerships that strengthen democratic institutions and advance the nation's campaign against corruption, economic crimes, and financial misconduct.
Twisdic Info Reports understands that as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, inter-agency cooperation among electoral bodies, anti-corruption agencies, and financial institutions is expected to play a critical role in ensuring credible polls and reinforcing public trust in the country's democratic process.
