Budapest Pride 2026 Draws Strong European Support as Thousands March for Equality and Human Rights

Thousands of people gathered in Hungary's capital, Budapest, on Saturday to participate in the annual Budapest Pride march, with political leaders, activists, and civil society organizations from across Europe expressing solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirming their commitment to equality, democracy, and human rights.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) issued a statement supporting participants, describing the event as a powerful demonstration of resilience, freedom, and human dignity.

According to PES, last year's Budapest Pride faced unprecedented restrictions that sparked widespread concern among European institutions and human rights organizations. In response, PES and its LGBTQ+ network, Rainbow Rose, coordinated a broad delegation of progressive political leaders and allies from across Europe to stand in solidarity with those defending democratic values and fundamental rights in Hungary.

This year's march, the organization said, reflects the determination of campaigners who have continued to advocate for equal rights despite political and legal challenges.

PES emphasized that equality should never be taken for granted, stating that protecting democratic freedoms and advancing the rights of LGBTQ+ communities require continuous effort and commitment.

«"Equality is never guaranteed. It must be protected, advanced, and fought for every day. This applies to LGBTIQ+ rights, democratic freedoms, and building an inclusive Europe based on respect and human dignity," the statement said.»

The organization also praised those participating in the march, saying their courage and solidarity continue to inspire supporters of equality across Europe.

Budapest Pride has become one of Central Europe's most prominent human rights events, attracting international attention amid ongoing debates over LGBTQ+ rights and democratic freedoms in Hungary. The event continues to serve as a platform for advocating inclusion, non-discrimination, and equal treatment for all citizens.

The 2026 Budapest Pride march highlights the continuing debate over civil liberties, LGBTQ+ rights, and democratic values in Europe. It also underscores growing international support for protecting fundamental human rights and ensuring equal treatment regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
