₦210 Trillion Mystery: Falana Drags Senate To Court Over Withheld NNPCL Probe Report

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has dragged the Nigerian Senate to court over its failure to release the outcome of its investigation into the alleged ₦210 trillion financial discrepancies uncovered in the audited accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
Falana is seeking a court order compelling the Senate to make public the report of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, arguing that Nigerians have a constitutional right to know the findings of an investigation involving one of the country's most significant financial controversies.

The controversy stems from the Senate's review of NNPCL's audited financial statements covering the period between 2017 and 2023. During the probe, lawmakers flagged about ₦210 trillion in financial entries they said lacked adequate explanations and supporting documents.
According to the Senate Committee, the questioned figures include approximately ₦103 trillion recorded as accrued expenses and liabilities, as well as ₦107 trillion listed as sundry receivables allegedly owed to the national oil company by various entities. The committee repeatedly described the explanations provided by NNPCL as unsatisfactory and demanded further clarification.

The Senate subsequently summoned former NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, former Chief Financial Officer Umar Ajia Isa, and other top officials linked to the period under review to explain the disputed figures. The panel also threatened to invoke its constitutional powers against officials who failed to honour its invitations.

Falana, however, maintains that transparency is essential in a matter of such public importance. He argued that keeping the committee's findings away from Nigerians undermines accountability and weakens public confidence in the legislature's oversight responsibilities.
The legal action is expected to test the extent of the public's right to access reports of parliamentary investigations involving alleged financial irregularities in government institutions.

The NNPCL discrepancies probe has remained one of Nigeria's most closely watched accountability cases, with many Nigerians awaiting clarity on whether the disputed figures represent accounting irregularities, documentation gaps, or evidence of financial misconduct.
