UMC Nigeria Legal Council Debunks Planned Protest Over GMC Court Case

The Legal Council of The United Methodist Church Nigeria (UMCN) has dismissed reports suggesting that the church is planning to organize protests following its recent court victory against the Global Methodist Church (GMC) at the Federal High Court.

In a public notice shared on his official Facebook page, the Chancellor and Legal Attorney of UMC Nigeria Episcopal Area, Barr. Benjamin Simon Panya, clarified that Rev. Salisu Waziri has no legal authority to speak on behalf of the church concerning legal matters.

According to the statement, members of the public are advised to disregard any statement, update, or press release issued by Rev. Salisu Waziri regarding the legal affairs of UMC Nigeria.

Barr. Panya further stressed that UMC Nigeria has no plans to embark on any protest, describing any contrary statement as a personal opinion that does not represent the position of the church.

The statement also explained that the church has a designated Communications Department responsible for official information dissemination, headed by Rev. Filibus Auta, the Director of Communications.

“In the UMC, we have a department responsible for communications, which Rev. Salisu Waziri is not a member of. Rev. Filibus Auta is the Director of Communications and the official spokesperson of the church,” the statement read.

The Legal Department expressed regret over any confusion or inconvenience caused by statements from unauthorized individuals and urged the public to rely only on officially approved communication channels for information concerning the church.

The notice was signed by Barr. Benjamin Simon Panya, Chancellor (Legal Attorney), UMC Nigeria Episcopal Area.
