The Abia State Government has officially commissioned the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, marking a major milestone in the state’s transportation development. The newly completed facility is now open for public use and is expected to significantly improve mobility and transit operations across the state.
The terminal, described as a multimodal transport hub, has the capacity to accommodate over 340 buses simultaneously. It is integrated with sustainable infrastructure and linked to the state’s expanding network of electric buses, with 20 already in operation and more expected in the coming weeks.
The facility was named in honour of Prof. Nnenna Nnennaya Oti, who served as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer during the 2023 Abia State governorship election. Her recognition is attributed to her widely acknowledged role in upholding integrity and transparency during the electoral process.
According to the government, the naming of the terminal goes beyond individual recognition, serving as a tribute to electoral officials, security personnel, party agents, and citizens who contributed to safeguarding democracy during the election period.
The project also features independent power and water systems designed to ensure uninterrupted operations, reflecting the administration’s commitment to building a modern and efficient transport system.
Speaking during the commissioning, the governor reiterated his administration’s vision for development under the theme “Raising the Bar,” emphasizing a shift away from what he described as “small ambitions” toward more impactful and transformative projects.
The contractors, Planet Projects Limited, were commended for successfully delivering the project, alongside key government officials including the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, and the Senior Special Assistant on Transport, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe, for their roles in executing the initiative.
Residents and members of the host community were urged to take ownership of the facility by maintaining cleanliness and protecting it from vandalism.
The government also called on citizens to fulfill their civic responsibility by paying taxes, noting that sustainable development depends on collective contributions.
