The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has elected Akinteye Babatunde, a student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), as its new National President.
The election, which took place during the association’s national convention, brought together student leaders and delegates from tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Babatunde emerged victorious after a keenly contested process, signaling a new leadership phase for the apex student body.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected president expressed gratitude to the delegates and pledged to lead with inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability. He emphasized the need for unity among Nigerian students, noting that collective action remains key to addressing pressing challenges in the education sector.
Babatunde also outlined his administration’s priorities, which include advocating for improved student welfare, engaging government authorities on education reforms, and strengthening the voice of Nigerian students on national issues. He promised to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that students’ concerns are adequately represented at all levels.
The leadership transition comes at a critical time when students across the country continue to demand better learning conditions, reduced tuition pressures, and more stable academic calendars.
Observers say Babatunde’s emergence reflects a renewed call for purposeful leadership within NANS, as expectations remain high for meaningful reforms and stronger student representation nationwide.
