From Tech Expert to National Role: 39-Year-Old Prof Segun Aina Takes Over JAMB

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a bold and forward-looking move in Nigeria’s education sector with the appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The announcement, made on Thursday through a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Aina will officially assume office following the completion of the second and final tenure of the current registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, on July 31, 2026.

A New Era for JAMB

The appointment of Aina signals a strategic shift toward a more technology-driven and innovation-focused administration within JAMB. President Tinubu expressed confidence that the young professor would consolidate on the remarkable reforms introduced by Oloyede while ushering in a new phase of digital transformation.

Under Oloyede, JAMB witnessed significant improvements in transparency, revenue generation, and examination credibility. Now, Aina is expected to take these achievements further by leveraging modern technologies to enhance efficiency, security, and accessibility in Nigeria’s tertiary admission process.

Meet Professor Segun Aina

At just 39 years old, Professor Aina is already a standout figure in Nigeria’s academic and technological landscape. A Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, he has built a reputation as a systems expert with deep knowledge in digital infrastructure and examination technologies.

His academic journey reflects global excellence:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent
• Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security
• PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University.

Executive training at Lagos Business School
Aina’s expertise spans critical areas such as cybersecurity, data systems, and digital process optimization—skills considered vital for modernizing Nigeria’s examination systems.

Deep Roots in Examination Systems
Interestingly, Aina’s connection with JAMB dates back to his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) days, where he first gained hands-on experience in managing examination data and national admission processes. This early exposure appears to have shaped his career path and passion for improving educational systems.
Over the years, he has also served as a consultant to major examination bodies like:
• National Examinations Council (NECO)
• National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB)
In these roles, he focused on strengthening examination integrity, deploying ICT solutions, and improving operational efficiency.

A Historic Appointment

Aina’s appointment is not just another leadership change—it is historic. At 39, he becomes the youngest Registrar ever appointed by JAMB, marking a generational shift in leadership within one of Nigeria’s most critical educational institutions.
His emergence reflects a broader trend toward empowering younger professionals with innovative ideas and global exposure to lead national institutions.

What Lies Ahead

With millions of Nigerian students depending on JAMB annually for admission into tertiary institutions, expectations are high. Stakeholders are looking forward to:
More seamless UTME registration and examination processes
Stronger anti-malpractice systems using advanced technology
Improved candidate experience through digital platforms

Greater transparency and accountability
If Aina successfully delivers on these expectations, his tenure could redefine how examinations are conducted in Nigeria and set new standards across Africa.
