Court Moves to Decide Jonathan’s 2027 Fate as Disqualification Suit Comes Up Friday

Fresh legal drama has emerged around the 2027 presidential election as a Federal High Court in Abuja prepares to hear a suit seeking to stop former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidency.

The case, which has already sparked nationwide political debate, is scheduled to be heard on Friday, May 8, before Justice Peter Lifu.

According to court documents, the lawsuit is asking the court to determine whether Jonathan is constitutionally qualified to return to the presidential race after previously serving as Nigeria’s president.

During proceedings on April 28, Justice Lifu ordered that hearing notices be served on all defendants involved in the matter after some parties reportedly failed to submit their responses within the required time.

The development comes amid growing public speculation about Jonathan’s possible political comeback ahead of the 2027 general elections. Although the former president has not officially declared his intention to run, recent calls from supporters urging him to contest have continued to generate reactions across the political landscape.

Political observers believe the court’s decision could become a major turning point in the build-up to the 2027 elections, especially as conversations around constitutional eligibility and political succession continue to dominate national discourse.

The case is expected to attract significant public attention as Nigerians await further legal interpretation regarding Jonathan’s eligibility to contest again.
