Nigeria witnessed a historic moment in Abuja as top political figures, business moguls, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the launch of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon’s long-awaited autobiography—an event that quickly turned into a remarkable display of wealth, honour, and national recognition.
The ceremony drew some of the most powerful names in the country, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who attended as the Special Guest of Honour. However, the spotlight shifted dramatically when former Defence Minister Theophilus Danjuma announced a staggering donation of N3 billion in support of the project—instantly becoming the highest donor of the day.
Not far behind was Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, who contributed N500 million, alongside several other prominent Nigerians who also made significant financial pledges. The donations are expected to support not just the autobiography but also legacy initiatives tied to Gowon’s lifelong contributions to national unity and development.
The autobiography itself is an extensive work that reflects deeply on Gowon’s life, leadership, and the critical decisions he made during his time in power, particularly during Nigeria’s civil war. Speaking at the event, Gowon explained that the book aims to set the record straight and offer his personal account of events that have shaped Nigeria’s history.
Beyond the book, the occasion served as a powerful reminder of Gowon’s enduring influence and respect across generations. Decades after leaving office, he continues to be celebrated as a symbol of unity, peace, and national service.
What began as a simple book launch ultimately became a grand national event—blending history, politics, and philanthropy into one unforgettable moment.
