A major controversy has erupted on social media involving popular Nigerian activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, following a serious defamation claim made against him on Facebook.
A user identified as Mezie—who describes himself as a human rights activist, writer, humanitarian, fashion enthusiast, and legal researcher—published a post alleging that Adeyanju was involved in the murder of a fellow student during his university days. The post further claimed that the matter was allegedly covered up with the assistance of Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo.
“This guy, Adeyanju Deji allegedly murdered his fellow school mate while in the university. Reports say he was helped to evade justice by Tinubu’s current minister of aviation, Festus Keyamo…” the post read.
The post quickly gained traction, sparking intense reactions in the comment section. Many users tagged Adeyanju, urging him to respond and take legal action against what they described as a damaging and unverified allegation.
In response, Adeyanju did not hold back. He publicly addressed the accusation, stating that he had ignored similar claims in the past, dating back to the administrations of Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, which he described as politically motivated attacks due to his activism.
However, this time, he says he is ready to take a different approach.
“I must now use one of you as a scapegoat and you are that person. I will for once break my rule of not using the police… I will formally write a petition for the police to investigate me for this crime you have alleged. You will have your day in court shortly,” Adeyanju stated.
He further revealed that his legal team would be contacting the accuser, signaling the beginning of possible legal proceedings.
Public Reactions Divided
The development has triggered mixed reactions across social media:
Supporters applauded Adeyanju’s decision, describing it as a necessary move to curb the spread of false information and reckless defamation online.
Critics, however, argued that involving law enforcement could be seen as excessive or an abuse of influence.
What’s Next?
With legal action looming, attention now shifts to how the case will unfold—especially if it proceeds to court. The situation highlights growing concerns over misinformation, accountability, and the consequences of social media speech in Nigeria’s digital space.
