Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially taken a major step toward the 2027 presidential election after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) confirmed the payment of ₦90 million for its presidential nomination form.
The party disclosed on Saturday that Atiku had successfully completed payment for the form and received an official receipt ahead of the next general election. According to the ADC, the payment was made through a bank draft, with the receipt dated May 8, 2026.
In a statement released through its official communication channels, the ADC described the development as “a new chapter in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” signaling the party’s readiness to position itself as a strong opposition force ahead of 2027.
The party also revealed that the formal presentation of the nomination forms is expected to take place on Monday at the ADC National Secretariat in Abuja.
Atiku’s move comes at a crucial moment in Nigeria’s political landscape as opposition parties continue to strategize against the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 elections. Political analysts believe the confirmation further strengthens speculation that the former Vice President is fully committed to another presidential bid under the ADC platform.
The ₦90 million nomination fee has also sparked nationwide conversations about the rising cost of political participation in Nigeria, with many Nigerians questioning whether such expensive forms truly support democratic inclusion.
Reports further indicate that other notable political figures, including former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, have also obtained ADC presidential forms, showing increasing interest within the party ahead of the primaries.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already outlined timelines for the 2027 elections, with presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.
Atiku, who previously served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, has contested the presidency multiple times and remains one of the country’s most influential political figures. His latest political move is expected to reshape conversations around coalition politics, opposition unity, and the battle for power in 2027.
As internal alignments continue within opposition camps, many Nigerians are now watching closely to see whether the ADC can emerge as a serious challenger in the next presidential election.
More political developments are expected in the coming days as parties intensify preparations for what may become one of Nigeria’s most competitive elections in recent history.
