Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' is the biggest live-action debut of 2026 so far, smashing records with an estimated $217 million global opening weekend. Queen musical Bohemian Rhapsody, which launched with $124 million in 2018 previously held the box office record for a musical biopic.
Adam Fogelson, chairman of the film's US distributor Lionsgate, said: "You don't deliver this figure unless you're seeing huge numbers across every conceivable demographic. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, this biopic chronicles Michael Jackson’s life from his childhood in the Jackson 5 to his peak as a global pop icon, culminating around the 1988 Bad tour. Starring his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, the film highlights his rise to stardom, creative genius, complex relationship with his father Joe, and personal struggles with fame, focusing on his musical journey.
