The United Methodist Church in Nigeria has taken a significant step towards establishing the United Methodist University of Nigeria following the unanimous adoption of a motion at the 44th Session of the Southern Conference.
The motion was presented by a church member who received the opportunity to address the conference through the Resident Bishop, Bishop Ande Ikimum Emmanuel.
The proposed university is envisioned as an institution that will promote academic excellence, Christian values, leadership development, research and the overall transformation of individuals and society.
During the presentation, three major proposals were submitted for consideration and subsequently adopted by the conference.
The first called for the establishment of the United Methodist University of Nigeria, with the aim of providing quality education while integrating Christian principles, intellectual development and leadership training.
The second proposed the constitution of an Episcopal-level task force by the Resident Bishop. The task force is expected to initiate the necessary processes, including conducting feasibility studies, identifying a suitable location and making arrangements for land acquisition for the proposed institution.
The third recommendation encouraged the Church to explore the possibility of engaging a Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor from the United States of America to provide academic leadership, institutional experience and professional guidance during the university's formative stages.
All three motions received unanimous support from delegates at the conference.
The adoption marks an important development in the Church's vision of expanding its contribution to education and human capital development in Nigeria.
Speaking on the significance of the development, the motion's presenter described the proposed university as more than an institutional project, noting that it represents a long-term investment in the future of the Church, young people and generations to come.
He also acknowledged that establishing a university would require deliberate planning, financial commitment, collective responsibility and sustained effort.
The development now sets the stage for further discussions and strategic steps towards translating the proposal into a functional institution.
The Church is expected to mobilise support, resources and relevant expertise as it works towards advancing the vision.
If successfully established, the United Methodist University of Nigeria could become another major contribution of the Church to Nigeria's educational sector.
TwisdicInfo Insight:
The unanimous adoption of the motion is an important starting point, but turning the vision into reality will require more than institutional approval. Feasibility assessments, sustainable funding, regulatory requirements, qualified personnel and long-term management structures will be essential to the success of the proposed university.
For now, the focus will be on how the Church translates this historic resolution into concrete action.
What is your opinion? Do you think establishing a United Methodist University of Nigeria will make a significant contribution to higher education and youth development in the country?
